Combating water freezing: heating solutions for poultry waterers
During periods of extreme cold, one of the major challenges for poultry farmers—whether professional or amateur—is to ensure constant access to unfrozen water. Clean, fresh, and unfrozen water is essential for the health of chickens, ducks, guinea fowls, or turkeys. When temperatures drop below zero, it becomes crucial to adopt heating solutions suited to waterers.
There are several devices available to keep water in a liquid state even under harsh winter conditions. Each of these tools meets specific needs depending on the type of waterer used and the volume of water to be protected.
The immersion heating element
This system comes in the form of a submersible electric heater, which is directly placed in a large water container (bucket, barrel, tank). It helps maintain the water at a temperature above the freezing point, even when the outside air is frigid.
Heating bases for waterers
These heating bases are designed to accommodate standard waterers (made of plastic or metal). They diffuse a gentle heat from below, preventing the water inside the waterer from freezing.
The flexible heating cord
Flexible and easy to handle, the heating cord is a sheathed heater that can be inserted inside tanks, dishes, or around water pipes. It prevents ice formation at the direct contact with walls or water, while remaining discreet.
