What is summer dermatitis in horses and what are its symptoms?
Also known as summer eczema, summer itch, or dermatitis, equine recurrent summer dermatitis (ERSD) is a very common chronic skin condition in horses, ponies, and donkeys. It is caused by a allergic reaction to the saliva of biting insects, particularly midges of the Culicoides genus, but also mosquitoes, horseflies, or bloodsucking flies. These insects are especially active between spring and autumn, which explains the seasonal recurrence of symptoms.
This allergy mainly manifests between April and October. The most affected areas by bites are the head, ears, mane, neck, belly, and base of the tail. The most visible symptom is intense scratching: to relieve their itching, horses rub insistently against anything they find (walls, trees, doors, etc.), roll on the ground, and sometimes bite themselves. This leads to skin lesions: pulled-out hair, broken mane, scabs, scales, or even open wounds. Over time, the skin can thicken, change texture, and pigmentation.
How to relieve horses from flies? Accessories and care
Prevention is the best strategy against insect bites on horses. Here are some practical tips and recommended products:
1. Fly spray for horses
A good fly spray is essential from June. It creates a protective barrier against insects. Choose specific anti-fly products for horses, non-irritating and effective for several hours. These repellents should be applied regularly, especially in case of rain or after exertion.
2. Garlic-based dietary supplements
Garlic is known for its natural repellent properties. Vital'Herbe supplements, offered in powder or in a licking bucket, help to strengthen the horse's natural defenses.
The Vital’Herbe Itch Away is specially formulated for sensitive horses prone to allergic reactions related to bites.
3. Fly sheets and masks
Additionally, use a light anti-insect sheet and a fly mask to protect the most exposed areas like the eyes and ears.
