Why are flies a problem in farming?

Anti-fly solutions for farmingFlies are not just a simple nuisance in farming: their proliferation has real impacts on the health of your animals, on the hygiene of the facilities, and on the productivity of the operation.

First, they can transmit numerous diseases such as salmonellosis or digital dermatitis. When they land on food or drinkers, they deposit germs and bacteria, which can cause digestive disorders or more severe infections.

In parallel, flies cause constant stress for the animals. This disrupts their water and food intake, hampers their growth, and weakens their immune system, making them more susceptible to other diseases.

All these impacts result in economic losses: more frequent veterinary treatments, decreased productivity, etc. Hence the importance of controlling these fly populations at the first signs of infestation.

Natural solutions to limit flies in your farm

It is quite possible to significantly reduce the presence of flies in your farm through natural methods.

Traps, first, are an excellent way to reduce the number of adult flies, particularly inside buildings. Sticky rolls, traps with scented baits, or electric fly killers can be strategically placed away from milking or food storage areas.

Essential oils can be used as a spray on bedding or directly in the buildings. Their effect is mainly repellent and their effectiveness varies depending on the type of oil and the insect's development stage. However, it is important not to diffuse them near the dairy or during milking to avoid altering the taste of the milk.

The general cleanliness of the farm is also crucial: a dry, well-ventilated environment free of decomposing materials greatly hinders fly reproduction.

Fighting flies in farming with chemical products: a reasoned approach

When natural solutions are no longer sufficient, chemical products can provide a quick and effective response. However, it's necessary to use them judiciously to avoid undesirable effects.

Insecticides, available in spray, powder, aerosol, or paint, target adult flies. Some, like those made from plant-based pyrethrum, are more environmentally friendly. They are applied to areas frequented by flies but should never be used on washed surfaces or in milking rooms. Wearing protective equipment is essential.

Larvicides act at the source. They block the development of larvae and must be applied monthly on bedding, manure heaps, or slurry pits.
